History
Fifteen years ago, as a new educator, one of the first things I was told was to “integrate culture.”
My journey as an educator began on Standing Rock Reservation. As a new educator, I had no real understanding of what cultural integration meant in practice. Despite earning a degree as a teacher, I had no training on how to integrate Indigenous culture or perspectives meaningfully into my classroom. I feel my story is common and reflects a broader gap in teacher preparation.

Our newsletters are intended to support yearly professional development goals, advancing educators’ teaching practices and understandings of working with Indigenous students and communities.
I began my teaching career on the Standing Rock Reservation, an experience that deeply shaped my understanding of education, community, and cultural resilience.
This experience got me thinking: “What is effective cultural integration?” That question became the foundation of my teaching philosophy. Over the past fifteen years, I’ve devoted myself to researching Indigenous cultures and exploring innovative, inclusive teaching practices designed to improve academic outcomes through meaningful cultural integration practices.
